Nació el 22 de octubre de 1917 en una familia inglesa de clase media-alta en Tokio (Japón). Hermana menor de Olivia de Havilland comenzó a trabajar con el seudónimo de Joan Burfield. Debutó en 1935 con 'No More Ladies' y durante los años 30 apareció en películas de George Stevens con el bailarín Fred Astaire, 'A Damsel in distress' (1937); 'Olivia' (1937), también dirigido por Stevens y protagonizado por Katherine Hepburn; 'Mujeres' (1939) de George Cukor y 'Gunga Din', la obra maestra de aventuras de Stevensy pero poco a poco su carrera se ensombreció. Apareció en películas de época en las que interpretaba a mujeres distinguidas. Al mismo tiempo escribía en la prensa amarilla sobre los detalles de la rivalidad con su hermana. Alfred Hitchcock la dirigió en 'Rebeca' (1940), el papel protagonista por el que fue nominada al Oscar a la mejor actriz y después con el mismo director aparece en Sospecha' (1941) y por la que conseguiría el Oscar. Se casó con el actor Brian Aherne (1939), con el productor William Dozier (1946), con el guionista Collier Young (1952) y con el periodista Alfred Wright Jr (1964). Publicó su autobiografía 'No bed of Roses' en 1978.
